Funds from the original Montana's Safe Routes to School application were originally intended to be used to construct a concrete, curbed sidewalk, spanning +/- 940 linear feet and 6 feet wide, along Stone Street. The project will also include gutters and a +/- 240 linear feet storm sewer and a +/- 130 linear feet concrete retaining wall with a chain link fence. The retaining wall and chain link fence were to be placed in an area where there is a steep slope and safety is a big concern. The project would have required preliminary and construction engineering, earthwork, demolition, repair of sections of the road with asphalt, traffic control, and mobilization. Utility relocation would not have been necessary.
Several public meetings have been held including:
6/2/2008 at the Gardiner Public School Library to discuss the preliminary design components of the sidewalk project.
7/15/2008 at the Gardiner Public School to discuss the final design components of the sidewalk project.
8/20/2008 discuss having the property corners along the north side of Stone Street identified as part of the sidewalk project.
Recently, because of the escalating cost of the project from the original estimate of $161,905 to over $400,000, additional alternatives are being examined. The alternative route currently being looked at goes along the north side of Stone Street near its intersection with Second Street, west one block to Third Street, north for one block on Third Street and then west along Spring Street to the western side of the school yard. Meetings are now being scheduled with school officials in Gardiner to discuss this as an option and, if agreed upon, approval from Federal and State funding sources will be sought. Following these permissions, it is expected that an engineering firm will be retained to prepare the necessary plans for the alternative route.
