The Yellowstone Gateway Museum is hosting a free event on Veterans’ Day, Wednesday, November 11, from 3-7 PM, to celebrate local veterans. Staff has updated Honoring Park County Veterans, an exhibit in the Pioneer Room, with new stories and artifacts. Admission to the museum is free during the event and the public is encouraged to attend. Refreshments are provided.

Poignant stories, photographs, and uniforms of the men and women who served in the military from the Civil War to present day, including the Spanish American Philippine War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Iraq War are on display. The Livingston homefront is richly interpreted with numerous artifacts from the museum’s collections.

This year the museum features new stories of World War II, including veterans Joe Garr, Bill Strong, and Floyd Witthoeft. A special exhibit showcases many artifacts recently donated to the museum by Joe Garr, including a trunk that carpenters built for him in Australia that carries the signatures of 160 servicemen.

To illustrate how WWII affected other Park County residents, stories about Verna Pepper Pulis, a missionary who served in China, and Spunky, a dog that participated in the Dogs for Defense program through the generosity of the Maxson family, are also included. A new interactive wheel also interprets a variety of interesting things that were happening at home during that time.

A special thank you goes to Susan Kraft who researched and wrote many of the new stories now on display at the museum.
