Livingston, MT: Park High School students enrolled in Shift Empowerment’s Community 360 class and the Yellowstone Gateway Museum invite the public to a gala event to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit, Communication: A Changing Conversation. The free event is slated for January 12, 5:00 to 6:30 pm, at the museum, 118 W. Chinook St. All members of the community are invited. Students will be on hand to talk about the project.
This fall students, Alexandra Centofanti, Caitlin Eyster, Alexis Fitzpatrick, Desirree Hollo, and Barrett Neal, along with their teacher, Hannah Roush, and museum staff collaborated on the new exhibit that interprets the progression of communication technology. Students researched and helped write the stories behind various museum artifacts, including diaries, letters, the telegraph, the typewriter, the telephone, cameras, the television, and more. They also assisted with other aspects of the exhibit curation, from conceptualization and messaging to artifact cleaning and event planning.
This exhibit gave students a lot of information, provoking them to think about technology and how much they take for granted. They learned about history and the creative people who invented communication technologies, making their lives much simpler. Community 360 empowers its students to take action in communicating with others and to teach others the importance of human contact—a very important factor in today’s world.
The exhibit is supported in part by a grant from the Park County Community Foundation. The students and the museum are also grateful to Jamie Isaly, industrial technology teacher, and his students for building exhibit stanchions. The communication exhibit will be on display for at least one year.
The Yellowstone Gateway Museum gala will include food and beverages for attendees, and the opportunity to soak up some great information about histories communication advances.
