Remembering Yellowstone, the Yellowstone Gateway Museum’s fall speaker series, continues on Wednesday, October 11, 7:00 pm, with Don De Jarnett, author of Cowboy Tales on the Eaton Trail in Yellowstone. De Jarnett shares stories that were told around the nightly campfire while experiencing the park with the Eatons. He adds several related stories while taking you on a “leisurely trip through Yellowstone.” The program includes images and is free and open to the public.

A native of Wyoming, De Jarnett was born and raised in Big Horn, Wyoming. He worked for Eatons’ Ranch and attended Sheridan College.  After college, De Jarnett worked for the Sheridan Press, Cody Enterprise and The Billings Gazette. The call of the cowboy became so strong that he began making saddles, opened his own saddle shop, and stayed on the edge of the cowboy life for 35 years.

After his wife Mary passed away in 2010 he started writing short stories for fun.  In 2014, he read an article about Yellowstone Park closing the Howard Eaton Trail, dedicated in 1922 after Howard established the trail in the late 1880s. Howard guided 40-60 dudes through on a 20-day, 157-mile “leisurely trip through Yellowstone.”

Not finding any books that had been written about Howard’s trip, De Jarnett began researching and found so much material that he turned it into a book, Cowboy Tales on the Eaton Trail in Yellowstone, published June 1, 2017.

The final program in the series is held on October 25. Lesley Gilmore, Director of Historic Preservation Services for CTA Architects Engineers and author of Canyon Village in Yellowstone: The Model for Mission 66, gives a program about the history of Mission 66, which enabled the National Park Service to upgrade, improve, and infuse funding into the neglected and over-used parks from 1956 through 1966.

All programs are part of the museum’s new Wednesday evening programming, Hump Day History, and are held at 7:00 pm at the Yellowstone Gateway Museum, 118 W. Chinook, Livingston. The speaker series is free and open to the public and refreshments are served. Doors will open at 6:00 pm for people to enjoy the museum’s exhibits before the program. Attendees must climb stairs to the top floor of museum for the program. A book signing follows the program.
